简介

HOME is a the remarkable new live recording from PIANIST BRUCE BARTH and SAXOPHONIST STEVE WILSON, two of jazz's most well-respected, gifted, in-demand and up-to-the-minute artists. Barth, who contributes four originals to the recording, joins forces with Wilson, his long-time musical ally as the two musicians, who first met and started working in bands together in New York more than 20 years ago, deliver an invigorating hour-long set. HOME is created in collaboration with the "We Always Swing" Jazz Series, the long-standing, Columbia, Missouri-based, presenter. The seven tracks here represent the best of an intimate musical conversation that took place in June 2009 between the two accomplished musicians. Captured in the living room of a Jazz Series board member, the "House Concert” showcases Barth and Wilson at their penultimate best. They play crisply, inventively and warmly throughout their excellent adventure intertwining --- and occasionally trading within -- the seemingly endless set of glorious musical passages. The enormous simpatico and mutual respect they have for each other, so evident here is obvious from the first note to the last. Talking to noteworthy critic and author Bob Blumenthal, who contributes the liner notes housed within this beautifully designed and colorful CD package, Barth says, “I like Steve's earthy, funky, soulful approach, which at the same time is very sophisticated melodically and harmonically." Adding a second thought the pianist tells Blumenthal, "[Steve] will always surprise you, and his improvisations are fantastic, but even in playing a melody he finds a way to put his stamp on it while still being true to the spirit of the original. I can identify him in three seconds when I hear him on the radio, whether on soprano or alto." Wilson can be heard on both instruments on HOME. Wilson for his part offered a complementary take on pianistic partner: "Particularly with Bruce," says the saxophonist, "his innate sense of time is there but is also unique; we can breathe together. It's a beautiful balance, keeping that internal drummer yet not worrying about when it slows down or speeds up." Barth and Wilson have shared the stage and the studio on countless occasions -- working together with others and playing in each others' ensembles, however they have NEVER recorded or performed in duo previously. "It's like tightrope walking without a net," noted Wilson when speaking with Blumenthal. "There's that empty space, and the temptation to fill it all up keeps you honest. It forces me to be patient and listen even more closely." HOME features seven tracks in all. The cumulative musical sketch that Barth paints within his four compositions truly runs the gamut from the more recognizable form that's laid out in "Blues Interruptus" to the more free-flowing, improvisational frame work that takes place within "The Ways of the West," which represents the pianist's recollections of the youth-filled days he spent in Southern California. Throughout HOME the duo delivers one substantive, intriguing and inventive reading after another whether playing one of the Barth pieces or interpreting any of the other three compositions that appear here be it Cole Porter's "All Through The Night," their take of the wonderful standard, "Sweet & Lovely" or their truly exciting examination of Bud Powell's energetic Wail," which, at the time of the performance, they dedicated to the late James Williams, a pianist and person that both Barth and Wilson knew well as a friend and musical colleague. HOME is likely to turn out to be one of the best live jazz recordings of 2010 -- what with two exceptional artists such as Bruce Barth and Steve Wilson sharing the headlines. The duo is represented exclusively by National Pastimes Productions, which can be reached by email: jazznbsbl@socket.net.
