"Story Songs", written and performed by David Goodrich, are retellings of well-known folktales, as well as newly invented stories set to music. With a lively and varied guitar accompaniment, the songs are presented in a mixture of voices - from sung to spoken, from narrator to character. While these are "kids" songs, David has made the conscious effort not to talk down to children. The music is catchy and the lyrics are witty enough that adults who may have been traumatized by a purple dinosaur can enjoy listening along. “I have been playing music for over two decades, and in recent years I have begun to write and perform songs for young audiences. The main inspiration would be the presence of children in my own life - two daughters to whom I have been telling homemade stories for several years now... Being a guitarist and singer, I wanted to tell stories with music, and after exhausting my repertoire of folk ballads and any other songs with narrative (those appropriate for small ears), I figured I’d make up my own.” — David Goodrich Among the stories told and sung in this collection are: “The Three Pigs” - the classic tale, with two younger pigs sacrificing quality to get their work over with quickly. Their ultimate fate is left to the listener to decide. “The Monkeys and the Crocodile” is an epic battle of wits in the jungle. “Goldilocks” finally learns the golden rule after her traumatic run in with the Grizzlies. “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” depicts a hard lesson: a boy learns the consequences of fibbing and his story unfortunately comes to a sad end. “Flying Song” is the story of two kids who build an airplane out of junk and soar over the neighborhood. “Jack the Brave“ tells the story of the boy who trades his cow for a few magic beans. .... David has performed these pieces at birthday parties, libraries, and schools.
