Formed in the Bronx in 1970, Brother Soul embodied the sound of the borough and the era: tough, tight, danceable funk. The eight songs in this collection comprise all of their four singles, A- and B-sides — from their debut, "Train Song" (a reference to the D Line that serves the Bronx), to their final single with the Leo Mini label, the jazz-funk "Mister Boogie." Along the way, the ten-piece band maintains their brassy, Kool & the Gang - like hooks ("Life Is Like A Maze," "Feelin' Funky") laid down over a fierce rhythm section anchored by bandleader James Leroy Harris's virtuoso bass playing (check the solo in "Do It Good"). Of course, the breakbeat classic "Cookies" is also included, an infectious goof whose drum-heavy choruses were immortalized by the b-boys and DJs who were then coalescing around the movement that would be known as Hip-Hop.
