Hip Hop - Rap: Flowalition - Just the Beginning Saturday, November 01, 2008 | Colorado Music Buzz By Nicole Cormier Doesn’t it seem like when everything is going great something comes up and throws a wrench in your game? Well that is Boulder hip-hop duo, Flowalition’s story, but both these local soldiers won’t let a little bad luck stop their mission of making real and honest hip-hop. Marz and Briz Ill met in high school in 1996, and together created Flowalition with their ambition of creating gritty yet intelligent underground music. They started battling and free styling at parties as teenagers, and haven’t stopped yet. They have opened for many legendary MC’s such as Nas, Immortal Technique and GZA and helped Boulder’s scene become a thriving hip-hop community. Recently Marz has found himself in a bit of trouble, which has required Flowalition to take a temporary hiatus. Briz is holding it down for the pair and is feverishly working on completing Marz’s solo album and the sophomore Flowalition album. Briz has found support in the local community and has teamed up with Uneek MC while awaiting Marz’s release, and they are experimenting with new styles and techniques. I recently found out about Flowalition at a show at Herman’s Hideaway and noticed Briz’s considerable talent. Sporting a “Free Marz” shirt, my interest was piqued in this local story that is nowhere near finished. Marz and Briz are what I would call raw, both in voice and lyrics. They rap about real issues, and reflect their influences, namely Wu Tang. The obvious commitment that Briz shows to Flowalition is admirable and I have no doubt that once Marz can rejoin the team that they will have many doors open up for them. This story doesn’t end here and I look forward to writing about Flowalition’s success in the future. www.myspace.com/flowalition CD REVIEW (13 Days) There is something to the cliché that the best music is made when an artist is at a low point in life. The most down-and-out albums seem to speak the clearest, and tend to be the most honest. Flowalition (Briz iLL and Marz) haven’t had it any easier then any other Colorado artists and their struggle speaks loudly on their debut LP, 13 Days. With simplistic but addictive beats by Grafik (Proximity), Briz and Marz flow with quick bursts of emotion and rapid-fire metaphors. Flowalition has been successful at mixing intelligence with a touch of grime allowing this album to appeal to heads across the board. 13 Days’ thirteen tracks feature other local talent, including Grafik, Golden Child, Proximity, Black P, and TaBi. Providing commentary on the struggles of everyday life, from politics to drugs, it seems that Flowalition has had some rough times. But because of this, a worthy album is here for us to enjoy. When not busy creating graffiti block prints and logos in class, they were meeting up after school to practice their music. Since that time the Flowalition sound has developed into a mix of intricate rhymes, complex language patterns, and dark deep beats. 13 Days, Flowalition’s debut album, was released July 10, 2007. 13 Days was well received and the initial 1000 copies sold quickly. Since 2007, Flowalition has sold units in Sweden, U.K., Germany, Japan, Mexico, United States, and Canada. Briz and Marz have opened shows for such acts as Nas, Immortal Technique, GZA & R.A. the Rugged Man to name a few and they’ve done countless shows all over the front range. Over the years Flowalition has worked with many producers but finally found the production style they were looking for with Grafik, from Proximity. After rocking countless shows, freestyles, battles, and fake Mc’s hearts right out their chest, Flowalition is ready to take the underground by storm.
