This track appears on my CD: ‘In Memory Only’ released on Amazon in 2012 but has some of my best studio and piano tracks from the mid 90’s to around 2005 when I originally mixed these tracks. (I recorded some new pieces again in 2008 and didn’t master the CD until 2012). Like a lot of my independently (no record company whatsoever) recording projects I only had funds for a short studio session and I used sequencers to prep for that or did some of the tracks at home. In this 1997 record I wrote all the parts including drum tracks for what was to be a ‘jazz quartet’ concept and then I was to do only the solos that involved piano while a guitarist friend was to do the guitar solo. Well, after seeing the chart he skipped out of the studio session; I guess jazz wasn’t his ‘calling’ and he sure didn’t care for long chord progressions! So I ended up doing the guitar solos and parts on a “midi guitar” which is a catch-all name for using a good guitar sample and playing it with a midi controller. BUT it came out great after mixing. Yet for over 7 years I had no idea I had a ‘mix’. This session remained in disordered and unmixed tracks stuffed away on a sequencer file for years! Then around 2005 in making an anthology to memorialize those wonderful years living in Daytona Beach with my just deceased parents I put together this mix for my CD: ‘In Memory Only” (available NOW on Amazon.com) After extensive mixing and mastering I was excited that I had a good composition in those files. It was just a matter of determining which track had the best solo where to delete some solos or mix them down and out. In the end this turned out to be such an ‘UPBEAT’ and ‘UPTEMPO’ track for my CD that I put it in the second slot after the INTRO which memorializes my deceased mother (died 2005) – The name of the piece: ‘BROKEN-HEARTED SHUFFLE’ is a bit of a misnomer! It’s quite upbeat and I play on all tracks except the drums I only programmed the patterns. I think it got its title because this is one of the few jazz progressions I’ve written that involves ‘augmented chords’ which have a dissonant bite when added to the major key and the solo on piano was a bit angular although it swings nicely. Those sudden angular phrases made me think of ‘a broken heart’ so that’s how it got this name. With such a nice GROOVE (not a shuffle) it should’ve been called; “The Light Hearted Groove” instead. This swings and the guitar solos is very up although recalling the early Pat Metheny of the 80’s (that’s not so bad for a ‘guy’ who only plays piano!) I’ve come to love it, although I have never played it again since this session. I’m publishing it as an advertisement to find the musicians capable of playing this as a new record where I hope to only have to play the piano (and synth). The quartet is called that as there are 4 main musical parts: Bass, drums, piano solo and guitar (also solos) plus chords done on synth. And guess what? Now, if I only can contact Mr. Metheny as he would be the best producer and the BEST guitarist to play this one with me!
