"So many secrets buried deep ..." a lyric from The Jade Diary's song Landscape of Dreams, well describes Cheryl Lim's bittersweet and dreamy concoction of pop, folk and rock. Her songs feature themes of melancholy, loneliness, desire, joy and of course, love amidst a backdrop of atmospheric sounds and lush vocals. It all began, in idyllic but isolated Perth, when Cheryl decided to form a band called Opus Red playing unique covers from Summertime to Sweet Home Alabama. It was fun while it lasted, but after Opus Red disbanded, the passion that Cheryl had for creating music never went away. Many songs and Kleenexes later, she decided that she would give it another go - but this time, it was not going to be another serious hobby. This time, it would mean plunging into a business well known for wannabes and near misses. A crazy idea, but it had to work. So in November 2006, she started The Jade Diary. The Jade Diary is a curious name and Cheryl explains where the name comes from, "The word 'jade' comes from my Chinese name 'Hui Lin' and the songs are a reflection of my hidden thoughts and emotions." In 2008 The Jade Diary recorded their debut EP, “Landscape of Dreams”. From the surreal realms of the subconscious mind to professions of undying love, the songs were produced by Rob Agostini who has worked with Blanche Dubois, and mastered by Steve Scanlon (Vanessa Amorosi, Potbelleez, Kate Ceberano and Diesel). The EP features breathtaking harmonies and ambient keyboards and guitars. As one reviewer has described, “The Jade Diary are a mixture of the pop elements of Fleetwood Mac (with vocalist and main songwriter Cheryl Lim reminiscent of Stevie Nicks in her vocal delivery) with some folk and light rock...Landscape of Dreams is a strong and musically-mature release from a promising group.” Fast forward to 2010 and The Jade Diary set to establish themselves in the local Perth live music scene inviting comments such as, "a group of exceptionally talented musicians whose interpretations of covers and compelling originals keep you coming back for more" and "they are a dynamic ensemble with their own unique stage presence." With the release of their single, “Girl With No Name”, they once again presented the world with their lush hook-filled melodies, honest lyrics and beautiful vocals. The Jade Diary attracted the attention of the judges of The Next Big Thing 2010 competition who said: "certainly some radio-friendly songs" and "an interesting style and mix of influences." Innocent romance-seeking themes in the music combined with darker, meditative and alluring elements, fused with pop-rock sensibilities results in a heady mix of whimsy and earthiness, which is where The Jade Diary sits, somewhere in the transition between the two.
