简介
What was a girl to do? Well she could write, arrange, and produce her own first full length album. Throw in a acoustic guitar, and some turntable skills and you've-"got m.e.e.k?" Unusual to say the least, extraordinary- to say it all. Her unique blend of Hiphop/Neo-Soul with elements of 60's-80's funk and acid jazz will make you fall in love with urban soul music all over again. Hiphop beats with rugged but intricate soulful production by the likes of MEANWHILE, m.e.e.k. mzteek,Picasso and others carry m.e.e.k. mzteek's message to the masses. Her voice is surprisingly smooth and her lyrics clever with heartfelt vocals, harmonies, and hooks. The skills of this female artist/songwriter/ producer/rapper can't be denied as m.e.e.k. captures the essence of the new renaissance of urban hiphop/soul music. Raised on the south side of Chicago, m.e.e.k. (mind elevation, elements, knowledge) was constantly being exposed to eclectic blends of the old and new. The cultural melting pot of Chicago's renowned Hyde Park area was the prime breeding ground for some of the most influential artists in today's music including Common, and R. Kelly. This bohemian haven, a cluster of talented artists, musicians and students gave m.e.e.k. mzteek a love for jazz, soul and all types of music. Growing up in the eighties and nineties her heart was instantly captured by the emerging hiphop culture and spirit. Hiphop became a part of her very essence. As long as m.e.e.k. could remember she used to buy tapes of Slick Rick, Run DMC, Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and many others listening to every note and line. Break dancing after school and working on her beat box as a child, turned into free styling in underground open mics and ciphers, to Disk jockeying for two ( hiphop/ top 40 urban) radio shows her freshman year of college before she first picked up the mic. m.e.e.k.mzteek never looked back. A love for insightful thought provoking music can be felt in her writing style, reminisant of Nina Simone, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill. m.e.e.k's experiences and way of telling a story, give the listener a slice of raw life and realness seldom seen on the radio today. The rap side of the m.e.e.k. equation is she has undeniable skills and isn't afraid to use them. Impeccable verses and confident delivery bring another dimension and flavor to her style of music. She's got a realness to her, a believable and intelligent control of the pen and note pad heavily influenced by east coast rappers like Biggie Smalls, Nas, Jay Z, Wu Tang and the neo soul Aquarian styles of Common, Bahamdia, Mos Def, Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul to name a few. With the help of some guest appearances from the legendary Chicago artist J.U.I.C.E., and REC Center's MENTAL CITY family m.e.e.k. uses her words, her voice, and her music to paint a picture of life. A reflection of her love of art, her first album explores Impressionizm. She invites the listener to take a step back and see the complete picture of m.e.e.k. mzteek. The blur of musical styles and fusion of raw jazzy vocals, and hiphop rhymes on a canvas back drop of funk and soul give those who have been waiting for more- more of what they've been waiting for.
