The songs in this album were written over about six weeks in the spring of 2013, and originated in the simple idea that it would be fun to write a whole bunch of songs. A tip for any songwriter who gets such an impulse: if you conceptualize a whole suite, or cycle, or whatever the best word will be, it is remarkable the feeling you can get that the whole thing has been planted and just needs a little time to grow, and a little work to harvest. Examples in my own work are the albums 20 Years, My ABCs: 26 Songs in English, Preludes and Holidays, and The Well-Tempered Singer-Songwriter: 24 Moods, the last of which was a songwriter’s emulation of Bach and Chopin among others who wrote preludes, or preludes and fugues, around the complete 24-key cycle. Well, here again I thought the keys could be a source of inspiration, so I set up a scheme. It starts in A, then goes to A minor, then E, E minor, B, B minor, and so on through G-sharp minor, which is half the cycle. At this point it felt like more fun to record than to keep writing, and this album is the result. Another album of twelve ought to be ready this fall. It’s all me here, singing and playing guitar and bass, and on “I Can’t Sleep”, drums as well.
