New Normal is Northern California group of dedicated cover band musicians getting back to their roots. On Splendid Ordeal they cover 4 favorite Dylan and 4 favorite Neil Young songs. The musical style is laid back solid rock with country, folk, and blue grass. Splendid Ordeal’s rhythm section sound is heavy rock. Old Man has the original instruments and pedal steel parts but have a heavy kick drum and bass bottom. The accents are big, rock accents. The sound and playing on Meet Me in the Morning is the same. In addition to banjo, fiddle, and mandolin, we play blue grass arrangements. The Gospel Plow arrangement is taken from Nashville Blue Grass Band. We added a rock beat to their version and replaced the banjo part with pedal steel. Pedal steel plays a major role in the soloing. Don't Let it Bring You Down was done with two acoustic guitars, an acoustic bass, and pedal steel. Vocally, we tried to follow the Dylan phrasing. It took a lot of practice. The project cost about two years’ worth of gig wages. It took 10 months to complete. It took a long time to finish but we enjoyed every step of the way (hence the name.) We hope you enjoy it.
