简介

Having developed a loyal following for their infectious, energetic organic power pop sound for almost a decade, NJ’s Stuyvesant are gearing up for the long-awaited release of Shmyvesant, on November 25th. The band’s third full-length release and first for the fledgling Sugarblast Music Company, founded by Al Crisafulli of Dromedary Records, the record is the band’s first full length album since 2011’s acclaimed "Fret Sounds." Recorded by Tom Beaujour at Nuthouse Recording, Shymyvesant is a concise set of hook-laden confident rock by Sean Adams - guitar, vocals; Ralph Malanga- guitar, vocals; Brian Musikoff –bass; and Pete Martinez – drums. To support the late fall release, Stuyvesant will be hitting the road in the fall of 2014. From the track “Baby Bear”, which kicks off Shymesant in grand fashion to “Hellbent for Heather,” an homage to the dream girls of our youth to one of their catchiest songs ever, “Oatmeal Song”, to “3 AM”, a song filled with hope and a sweetness, guitarists Malanga and Adams race each other through blistering licks backed by drummer Martinez’ driving beat and Musikoff’s nimble bass lines. The album also features horns from Scott Zillitto of The Everymen, and Greg Vegas of Monsterland, in addition to keyboards from Overlake’s Lysa Opfer. Having a deep pedigree in NYC/NJ indie rock and creds that read like a who’s who of college rock, (Malanga, Adams and Musikoff were staples on the ‘90s Hoboken scene), the members of Stuyvesant left their former groups at the advent of the 2000s and created a band to continue the pursuit of perfect power riffage, rousing choruses, and impassioned vocals. Musikoff, who is a noted cartoonist, having designed animation for greats such as Scharpling & Wurster, Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, and Andy Shernoff, first played with Sean in Friends, Romans, Countrymen. With strong NJ ties, drummer Martinez is the sole proprietor of the first and only drum shop in Hoboken, The Drum Den. The band, who lifted their name from the liquor store where Adams worked growing up in the Journal Square section of Jersey City, released their first EP, "Quit More Often" in 2005, followed by 2008’s "Linden Calling", the 2010 EP "Jihad Me At Hello" and the previously mentioned 2011 release "Fret Sounds." Described by CMJ scribe Rebecca Nathanson in her review of "Fret Sounds," "Stuyvesant…is unabashedly, and refreshingly, forward with its intention to lose all pretenses and just play good rock music.” Jersey Beat’s Phil Rainone proclaimed, "Mmm-mm-mmm…the band just rocks my socks off on each and every tune! Gently defying the predictability of the jangle-pop punk/alterative genre, this quartet from Jersey has more than enough original ideas about guitar texture, melody, vocal styling’s, and drumming (this rhythm section sounds like they’re on a mission from God), to lift Fret Sounds well above the ranks of genredom.” As Jeff Lyons from UsedWigs.com declared, “In an indie rock scene crowded with overly-serious bands, mandolin-strumming folkies, and lightweight synth-heavy 80s revival acts, it’s incredibly important and necessary to embrace genuine rock bands like Stuyvesant who brazenly and effortlessly serve up a power pop platesetter of goodness with some serious musicianship and a love for giant hooks, razor-sharp stop-starts, and soaring melodies replete with glorious backing oohs and ahhs. They are one of those bands you sing along to after the second spin of their record - gleefully infectious and exhilarating.”
