简介

The traditional Celtic music of Cornwall, UK. 'Cribbar' was the the fourth album from internationally renowned ambassadors of Cornish traditional music Dalla. Dalla’s albums have received many rave reviews and achieved international acclaim, and they have also ‘taken their music to the people’ with countless performances abroad. Members of Dalla have performed Cornish traditional music on stages throughout the United States, Canada, Scandinavia, most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East. But, as Dalla’s Neil Davey says: “Although I feel very fortunate to have been able to travel to so many amazing places through music, at the end of the day it is my homeland Cornwall which amazes and inspires me most, and which inspires the greatest love. Our music is always rooted in this love for Cornwall and her culture, and I think this album - Cribbar - even more than ever, is truly a love song for Cornwall. There are some strong links to Neil’s childhood home in Newquay, Cornwall, on the album - the title piece, ‘Cribbar’ is named after the mighty wave, legendary amongst surfers, which hits Fistral beach each year, and the whole album opens with the sound of Neil crying ‘Heva!’ (‘Shoal!’) through a genuine 1850s Huer’s Horn from Newquay, thought to belong to one of his relatives. “Some of my family were huers who used to alert the seine fishing boats and shout instructions to them from the cliff top through these horns. I couldn’t believe it when we tracked down a huer’s horn to use on the album, and discovered that it had belonged to one J.Clemens, who was a relative of mine!” said Neil, “Its a great way to start a track which is all about the Newquay harbour fish cellars, and the troyls (parties) they had there, where my grandfather and great-grandmother used to dance and play music” Other tracks are linked to different parts of Cornwall, such as ‘Tolla Rooz’ - the words of which were written in Cornish (A Celtic language closely related to Welsh and Breton) in 1710 and describe fishing around Mounts Bay, and ‘Falmouth Packet’, a tale of press-ganging in that area. Falmouth Packet features the fine voice of singer, guitarist and crowdy crawn player Steve Hunt, who has joined Dalla since their last recording. One song, ‘Turning of the Tide’ was written by Hilary Coleman after a vivid dream of returning home across the Tamar to Calstock when she was living away. This track features the mighty and uplifting voices of The Perraners as guests. “We are lucky enough to be joined by some wonderful guests on this album,” said Hilary ”as well as The Perraners, there are also fantastic contributions from Jen Dyer on viola, Neil’s brother Kyt-Le Nen Davey on accordian, and my own brother Will Coleman on bagpipes. There is also even a cameo appearance on the title track by Tom Tremewan from Perranporth declaiming, in Cornish, part of the poem ‘Cribbar’ by Alan Kent. Tom is a lifelong surfer whose father introduced some of the first surf boards to the UK in the 1960s, so that couldn’t be more appropriate!” The music includes previously unheard material as well as favourites from Dalla’s live performances, and pieces specially commissioned for band member Bec Applebee’s hugely successful one woman theatre show Oh Mary, and also for the BBC Radio 3/Royal Philharmonic Society award winning show 'One Day, Two Dawns'. Other albums by Dalla: A Richer Vein (2001), More Salt (2004), Rooz (2007) and 'K5' (2013) Dalla Contact: info@dalla.co.uk www.dalla.co.uk wwwfacebook.com/dallapage
