简介
The centerpiece of Liverpool band Peter and the Wolf is the singing and songwriting of Marc Sunderland, which caught the attention of Elbow frontman Guy Garvey and led to the release of the latter’s debut EP on Garvey’s own Skinny Dog label. Peter and the Wolf’s debut full-length is an album exploding with peppy, infectious pop, flecked with folk and soul touches here and there but mostly suggesting a less twee Belle and Sebastian. Backed by bassist Hugo Harrison and drummer Donna Dosanjh, Sunderland weaves tales of romantic disappointment and the darker side of life, but he mates them with the catchiest, most ebullient melodies imaginable, neatly side-stepping accusations of miserablism that less perky sonic settings might have engendered. Whether he’s spitting out syllables over the taut, terse rocker “White Noise” or launching into the effervescent chorus of the chugging, ‘60s-soul-tinged “Talk About You,” Sunderland leads the way for Peter and the Wolf with such élan that it’s easy to see what motivated as esteemed a personage as Garvey to snap the band up and unleash them on the world at large.
