简介
The project Sugar God, despite any possible connection to Brazilian farming, is based in Moscow. Even more specifically, Sugar God is a one-man enterprise, overseen by Evgeny Pozdnyakov. He has been writing and recording solo material for the last three years, moving gradually from wholly acoustic beginnings to his current glo-fi or chillwave instrumentals. The transition between those two styles has led en route to a couple of related EPs: "Island" (in 2012) and the new publication, "Amanzi" (FFM19). Pozdnyakov takes special inspiration from Moss of Aura (Baltimore), John Maus (Minnesota), and Sweden's Molly Nilsson. Perhaps more telling, however, is his admiration for Twin Shadow. When interviewed not long ago, this New York artist (aka George Lewis) remarked: "Well, I really believe in storytelling through songs... Even in the 80s, they had amazing songwriters who were writing songs similarly to the Beatles or Harry Nilsson. They had that type of songwriting, but production that was of the time period – the drum machines and synths. I’m from the same songwriting schools as those people. I really believe in the complete song: not just a mood song, or a song that’s just about the beat or some repeated hook..." Hence the endless comparisons of Twin Shadow to the aesthetic and technology of that same, prior decade. Sugar God looks in the same direction - towards the same years - and, tellingly enough, he is accompanied by a glo-fi soundtrack.
