Seo Linn Celebrating 1916 ‘Music Makers’ - Released 25th March Ireland's first bilingual Number One song in 2016? The odds have shortened greatly thanks to the release of "Musicmakers" by Seo Linn - a pop/trad stomper of a tune that was dreamed up to commemorate and celebrate the 1916 centenary and commissioned by RTÉ. Thrillingly connecting the musical dots between the past and the present and mixed by the acclaimed Grammy nominated producer, Veronica Ferraro (David Guetta, Destinys Child) - "Musicmakers" will shake, rattle and roll you in the language of your choosing. Produced and co-written by Greg French, the song was inspired by the 19th Century Irish poet Arthur O'Shaughnessy's famous "Ode" which opens with the lines "We are the music makers/And we are the dreamers of dreams" -words from times of old , that still transcend the test of time, forwarding thinking for future generations. They have also been sampled not just by Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Family but also the Limerick-born Aphex Twin. Perfectly balanced linguistically between Gaeilge and English, the song accurately represents its creators. Seo Linn are Stiofán, Keith, Daithí, Kev, Cathal and Conor who come from all parts of Ireland but met up as young teeenagers when they had individually been packed off, like many before them, to an Irish language camp, Coláiste Lurgan in Connemara. With not much Irish between the six of them and not much motivation to learn it, they quickly found that using Irish as a conversational tool rather than having to study it as a school subject was a very interesting proposition. With music a common love, they began translating the big hits o the day into Irish and recording cover versions as Gaeilge. When they put their as Gaeilge version of Avicii's "Wake Me Up" up online, they were shocked to find that it had amassed over one million views within a week. The Swedish hit-maker himself joined the in the chorus of congratulations, with a message saying "This is so cool - I can't understand a word of it but I love it!". There are now around 20 million views of the collective Coláiste Lurgan videos. You could point to the mix of traditional instruments with modern rhythms as the appeal but that would be missing the point here. Seolinn have been gleefully jumping all over genres since day one and the music is their only message. With "Musicmakers" they have released one of the songs of the year. If the song has one eye on the past, its gaze is fixed firmly in the future. Infectious, incessant beats drive a runaway melody line as the words speak to us of our here and now. Seo Linn are the makers of music and the dreamers of dreams. Make "Musicmakers" the first ever bilingual Irish Number One
