Stewart Tormey aka Malcolm Funktion was born and raised in Dublin in 1979, he grew up with an enthusiastic approach to music, listening constantly to various artists and bands of that time and in his early years even tried his hands at the guitar and drums. In 1994 he was no longer permitted to attend secondary school due to his unwillingness to cooperate and perused an apprenticeship with precision artwork which enabled him to purchase his first set of decks. After building up his record collection considerably, Stewart was still not happy with the music he was buying and couldn't quite find exactly what he was looking for. Perused by his determination for music and mixing records he kept searching and stumbled upon artists such as Adam Beyer, Thomas Krome and Cari Lekebusch and knew he found exactly what he was looking for, he later learned that this form of music was called techno and he was hooked. In 1997 Stewart got his first dj gig warming up for Julian Liberator, from that he went on to headline such clubs as the Temple Bar Music Centre, the Kitchen (which was a club in the Clarence hotel owned by members of U2) and the pod (known now as tripod) which won a Smirnoff Dance Award for its particular night that promoted up and coming Irish djs. During this time Stewart turned his attention to making his own music, but at the time, did not take it seriously. He later moved to Galway and co- founded Gimik Records, Galway's only dance music store selling vinyl to dj enthusiasts and also set up his own techno club night, giving punters an alternative answer to the chart topping clubs. In between running his store and club nights, Stewart dove more into the production side of music and was later asked for one of his tracks to be put on a compilation album to promote unknown Irish electronic artists. Stewart now makes music as often as he can and doesn't limit himself to one genre, anyone having listened to his music will find that he will often come out with tracks ranging anywhere from techno, electro, drum and bass, breakbeat, house, ambient and rock. Stewart says he doesn't intend to ever stop making music and promises that if you like his music now that it will only keep getting better.
