I'm Sam Martyn, a folk singer and musician from Hull, and this is my debut album. I've been singing at the (Not) The White Horse Folk Club in Beverley, East Yorkshire, for a few years now and I'm also a member of Hull folk band Beggar's Bridge (you can find their album, Riding East, on iTunes). I also play piano, low and high whistle, and harmonium. My influences include June Tabor (quite simply a heroine of mine) and Eliza Carthy. The title for Drifting on Out comes from a line in one of the tracks, Shiver Me Timbers, by Tom Waits. Crazy Man Michael is a version of the song by Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick, and One More Dollar is a song by Gillian Welch which I was inspired to cover after hearing it sung by Irish singer Tommy O'Sullivan. Harry Eddom is close to my heart as a Hull lass - written by Bill Meek, it tells the story of the only survivor of the Triple Trawler Tragedy of 1968. My fellow Beggar's Bridge bandmate Al Catton is on guitar. I also heard Tommy O'Sullivan sing The Contender, and I just had to do my own version. Giles Collins is a traditional song that I play the harmonium on, with Martin Hainstock on the mandolin. The final track is a medley of two slow Irish airs with a bit of a New Age twist. Enjoy! :)
