For the best sounds from south of the border, SESAC Recordings proudly introduces Alberto Socarras whose artistic approach, distinctive imagination and skillful execution make him one of the finest flutists in the world. Although schooled as a classical musician, Socarras has successfully applied his virtuosic ease and remarkable techniqes to popular music, from jazz to the Latin-American field. As a native Cuban, who has been in the United States since the early 1940’s, his interpretations have singular charm reminiscent of the Spanish-American scene – gay, wistful and often passionate. His flute punctuations and feathery flights of fancy are seemingly detached, yet they deftly blend into the accompanying orchestral passages – the unchained chatter of bongos and drums, free-spirited strings and irrepressible reeds. Be it bolero, bounce, Latin swing, cha cha, or any of these dozen renditions, Socarras is always on the move – it is fairly difficult to determine when he actually does take a breath during his rapid flute sequences. Here then is the Socarras touch – ’Flute and Fiddles’ – a rich flow of improvisatory ideas arranged and performed with a vigorous perspective and an exciting expression.
