Riding high on their 27th release, MFR Records welcome back J Beatz with his latest release: Hybrid EP. Kicking of the EP with the very familiar grimey kicks and drums which come with any J Beatz track, the first track from the EP ‘Hybrid’ filter up and down to create a light ambiance in an underground bass throb setting. With stuttering beats, clinks and a light bassline this sound is firmly rooted into the Grime domain. Continuing to take you on a sound trip, ‘Vine’ is a statement track from the 22 year old producer and should be taken as a reminder that J Beatz is no amateur amongst the Grime scene. An instrumental track which sounds as if it could take the whole of the Lord Of The Mics VI MCs on there, the stomping drums, buzzy basslines and spooky sounds effects throughout the track should be taken as a warning. ‘Baby Powder’ shows the more soulful side of J Beatz’ Grime-making, with a deep bassline, sensual vocals, simplistic drum pattern and some extra strong horns, this EP proves more and more suitable for the ice cold winter months. A great track to pace Grime ravers energy to, allowing listeners to appreciate the darker, mellower side to Grime. Complimentary to the EP, Limitless remixes ‘Baby Powder’ from the slow-paced Grime infused track to become a Grime-Tech hit instilled with tingling hi-hats, the tightest claps and diamond cut percussion. On the whole J Beatz provides a rugged release with the Hybrid EP, which indisputably will attract the ears of the ever growing Grime scene of 2015.
