简介

Ian Foster is familiar with the cycle of a song. Since 2006, the Newfoundland, Canada-born songwriter has been writing, recording and touring his work around Canada and Europe. Ian’s songs are engaging and deeply introspective on record, while his live performance adds both insight and wit to create a dynamic live show: people leave humming a melody and remembering a story. Ian’s music combines many of the classic elements of folk songwriting and storytelling with newer approaches to the genre. His albums contain a mix of traditional instruments (dobro, accordion, mandolin, bodhran, violin and cello all appear on his newest release) and modern instruments and effects. With his latest album The Great Wave, Ian digs deeper into the root of the story and song than ever before. Recorded over five weeks in an open concept house/art gallery in Pouch Cove, NL, the album boasts an impressive array of sounds that use atmosphere and space to bring this broad collection of songs together. The songs themselves tell the story of Ian’s diverse travels since his last album, The Evening Light, was released in 2011. "Ethie," is a song about a shipwreck on the northern peninsula of Newfoundland that happened in 1919. "Down the Line" came from an afternoon Ian spent playing for school kids in Black Tickle, Labrador: a community of less than 150 that is only accessible by plane and boat. "The Great Wave" is a WWII story from a small northern town in Alessandra, Italy that was told to Ian when he toured there in 2012. Engineered by Robert Kelly (Passenger, The Once, Sherman Downey), The Great Wave features a stellar array of musicians including Sandy Morris of The Wonderful Grand Band (dobro), Aaron Collis of the Dardenelles (accordion/mandolin), Fred Jorgansen of The Navigators (bodhran), Nick Coultas-Clarke and Josh Banfield of Repartee (drums and bass), Jerry Stamp (harmonies), and more. Ian is a multiple MusicNL and ECMA nominee, and his music has been played on radio internationally, from Newfoundland to the Netherlands. He has been compared to the likes of Bruce Cockburn and Leonard Cohen, and has been called “Canada’s best kept secret” (Mescalina Magazine, Italy).
