It was late at night and I had been driving for several hours through Utah. The girl sitting behind me was from Virginia, where she was studying to be a teacher. I was enchanted by her southern accent and friendliness. I had all sorts of fantasies about what would happen when we reached Denver. At one point, she decided to help me out by massaging my neck while I was driving. That put a sudden end to our trip cross-country. Up ahead a medium-sized camper had slowed down and come to a stop on the two-way highway. The driver didn’t have his signal on so I decided to just pass him. At that moment, he started to turn off the highway on to a road on the left that I never saw. I slammed on the brakes, but it was too late and I smashed into the back of the camper. Yotan’s front end was totally crushed in and the back of the trailer was badly dented. Thankfully, no one was injured, though an old man who was inside the camper seemed a little shaken up. Yotan was not drivable so we pushed it off on to the side of the road. As we were exchanging licenses and insurance cards, a guy came along in his car and asked if we needed help. Miraculously, he was on his way to New York and needed a couple of drivers to help him get there fast, so we gathered our things and left with him. The hitchhikers had gotten a ride earlier. I could tell they felt bad about leaving us, but I felt worse. Just as we were about to fulfill one of our main cross-country goals, I completely blew it. That's mostly what this album is about, romance as a refuge and opportunities lost.
