Cathy Ponton King's 3rd CD of her original blues and ballads brings in two of the foremost blues guitarist in the world today, Ronnie Earl and Jimmy Thackery. Also making a guest appearance is the great upright bassist Butch Warren who has played with Thelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock and many other jazz greats. Cathy Ponton King has been singing blues on the East Coast for the past 20 years and has recorded three albums of her own material and songs written by her husband and producer Jeff King. THE CRUX brings in her superb band including saxophonist Ron Holloway who currently tours with Warren Haynes, the Allman Brothers and frequently plays with Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, and Little Feat. Bill Starks on piano, Antoine Sanfuentes on drums, and the great bassist John Previti provide soulful and supportive backing. The songs on "THE CRUX" are varied in style and feel and go from deep deep blues to a raucous zydeco song, "I Want You To Be Happy". The opening song, "SUGARFACE", brings in her horn section and sets the tone with this party style Memphis blues. And Ronnie Earl blows the roof off with the blistering guitar leads he's known for all over the world. When Ronnie Earl comes down to Cathy's slow blues, "Cerulean Blues", his soft and burning lead guitar sweetly accompanies Cathy's strong and sultry vocals. Jimmy Thackery, Cathy's friend from the Bethesda Maryland music community years ago, provides his tasteful and heartfelt guitar to the songs. His brilliant guitar moves from all the styles presented here; from rockabilly to funk to zydeco, and the blues.
