Duo Guitiano is formed by Colombian - American guitarist Carlos Castilla and Cuban - American pianist Amanda Virelles. Both started their artistic careers as soloists, finishing bachelor, master and doctoral degrees from conservatories and universities in Cuba, Colombia, Russia and the United States. They combine their performing careers with mentorship of the young generation. As pedagogues, they have held positions in music schools, conservatories, and universities abroad and in the US. Currently, Castilla teaches at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and North Carolina State University. Virelles is a professor of music at Fayetteville State University. This recording is a compilation of pieces from the 19th century, for piano and guitar duo, also featuring Giuliani’s Gran Sonata Eroica, for solo guitar. Lesser known composers like Kuffner, Eulenstein, Pettoletti and Molino take center stage in this compilation, together with staple composers of the guitar repertoire such as Carulli and Diabelli.
