简介

Born in Tasmania and arriving in Sydney after a decade in the remote north of Australia collecting indigenous languages, Bronwyn worked in Sydney as a linguist and combined this with acting, singing and being a mother. She picked up her guitar again and began songwriting when her son grew up and left home. This EP is the result of her first year of writing. Bronwyn joined the vibrant open mic scene in and around Newtown in inner urban Sydeny, while following her favourite local folk, singer-songwriter and bluegrass performers. She soon met local musician and producer Brian Campeau and recorded these songs in his studio. With a love of Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, Bronwyn’s songs favour a 6/8 rhythm, a vocal centred aesthetic and gentle harmonies. With her natural stage presence, her heartfelt and passionate performances have found their place in the indie-folk scene. On The Bones of Love is a sometimes dark, sometimes quirky, always poetic collection of story songs, touching on obsession, death and loss, unrequited love, anger, sacrifice and fulfilment. Brian Campeau’s intelligent production balances Bronwyn’s clear vocal, simple guitar and harmonica with a selection of strings, from the smooth bass lines of Phil Hall, the lilting sweep of Anna McInerney’s violin, the hearth and home of Jenny Shimmin’s banjo to the irresistible undertow of Mary Rapp’s cello. Combined occasionally with the magic of Campeau’s own guitar line, the beats of Jess Ciampa’s percussion and Dan Pliner’s rich piano, the songs are woven with harmonies from Georgia Mooney and Brian Campeau. Set in a land far away, written during the dark Ramadan of 2014, this song references obsessive love, where the rose and thorn twist their way to narcissus and the pool of reflection. Like most of my love songs it walks a high wire between love and freedom. The Shortest Day: (Bronwyn on vocal and harmony, Anna on violin and Phil on bass) Written on the day that Izzy (Peter Knox) died. Maybe he wrote it with me, flying around with his last goodbyes. His death was sudden and we were all in shock. This one is for his sweet lady, his love, Lynne Sanders-Braithwaite and is the love song of an artist and a song maker. Boots On The Ground: (Bronwyn on vocal and harmonica, Brian and Georgia on harmonies, Anna on violin, Jenny on banjo and Phil on bass.) Pollyanna played the glad game, but it didn’t always protect her tender heart. In this story she doesn’t win Jimmy, but she does come back to earth with a thud, her pride almost intact, to dance and sing again. Get That Woman: (Bronwyn on vocal, Phil on bass, Anna on violin and Jess on Tupan and shakers) Set in a pub where a lonely old grump sits in the corner, moaning and groaning about everything, especially that woman, always singing her way into his head. Stingray: (Bronwyn on vocal, Georgia on harmonies, Dan on piano and Mary on cello.) Set in Arnhem Land, on the eve of the birth of a first daughter. The Stingray sings her song of love, sacrifice and transformation. She becomes the protecting spirit for a man (artist/hunter) and his three daughters. Written for Michael Eather and Djimbarrwala and their daughters, the Stingray Sisters, Noni, Alice and Grace. Here To Stay: (Bronwyn on vocal and harmonica, Phil on bass and Jenny on banjo) Gently resurfacing from the deep into the light. With the hope of new adventures ahead, leaving behind once and for all, the dark tunnels of consequence. Here to stay, where love and freedom seem in perfect balance.
