简介
"...and so the music went all round the world and with the start of the new millenium came Danny K's "free" album Freetrader - an album about the changing nature of media distribution, the rise of the independent artist, the reclamation of music from the big shiny buildings with lots of white powder in the toilets - the freetrader was for all of us - a state of mind - an altruism...." Danny's second album appeared in 2000 and was again a concept album though this time more in the way it was marketed than in the music itself. Freetrader was (and still is) in fact the worlds first free album and Miss My Touch became the most downloaded mp3 in the UK that year. It was co-written with Andy Hoskings who also appears on Because of This - the track that became famous because of its speedy up drums! Sarah Millyard returned to provide vocals on Never Again and Sarah's Dream written by d.ash The album is essentially a philosophy growing from a renaissaince in the independent music community; music in its most pure form should and could be free. Whilst traditional large record companies bemoaned the rise of file-sharing sites such as Napster - independent musicians saw an opportunity to utilise the new mp3 media to riase awareness of their brand on a pan-global scale (a number of sea-faring references on the album refer to the way the music is "Sailing off" such as in the navigational lament The Four Winds). Members of communities such as the Electonic Scene began letting people download music they had made with Creative Common Licences - that allow freedom of non-commercial use. This new form of music distribution is in fact a logical progression of the demise of the physical product, namely the compact disc, that intrinsically has a physical value. This allows you to embrace file-sharing technology and other such viral marketing. There is, after all, more to life than money. The album is also the first of a number of collaborations with graphic designer Jack Lightfoot.
