Group improvisation was a further challenge particularly when a collective coherent thinking had to be achieved through creative minds. But since 1975 history has proven that the once venerated combination of the Soul Brothers was a perfect fit that took the world by storm – we actually had the world in our pockets. We gave mbhaqanga a flavour that continues to nourish the hearts of music lovers across the globe. This instrumental album is a heartfelt tribute paid to the fallen heroes – Soul Brothers co-founders: Tuza Mthethwa, Zenzele Mchunu, American Zulu and David Masondo. Putting it together was a therapeutic experience that enabled me to reminisce about the splendid moments I shared with these four giants of music who were my brothers, friends, mentors, and confidants. Today when I reflect on our 40-year journey my heart swells with pain as I, the youngest of the five founder-members, witnessed their deaths as each of them was snatched away by the evil eagle through car accidents. However, the wisdom that they shared with me built a man in me who is now able to stand tall and continue with the Soul Brothers legacy. Their spirits continue to give me the strength to face life with a courageous heart. I would like to thank God, the almighty, for his mercy over my life. He wrapped me with his warm caring hands when I nearly died from a gunshot that left my finger injured in March 2015.
