“Music to soothe your soul”, “feel good music”, are both phrases that describe the sounds of D.L. Yancey. Deeply rooted in acappella southern gospel music, let there be no surprise when you hear his smooth vocal and harmonic hooks over edgy guitar chords. His songs have been noted as "organic soulful tunes of creative messages" and he is most recognized as a "soothing tenor". Native to Hampton Roads, Virginia, D.L. spent most of his childhood singing in a quartet gospel group with his cousins. Now a self-taught guitarist, D’Leon attributes most of his songwriting and performance inspiration to his childhood music experience. “My entire family, we grew up singing, writing, and performing songs. A typical evening together usually involved singing together acappella. So, for me, when writing songs I usually hear the music first and then I write the lyrics to match the feel of the music.” Outside of his musical genetics, D.L. can recall listening to the sounds of “the quiet storm” as a young child. “For some reason when I was a young boy I remember always being out late with my parents, and I would fall asleep in the back seat of the car as we listened to the “oldies but goodies”, he says with a big grin and distant look. “I remember listening to songs like “Members Only” by Bobby Blue Bland, Marvin Gaye’s “Distant Lovers”, and “How Deep Is Your Love” by the Bee Gees , just to name a few”. D.L. believes this to be a major reason for his “old soul”, which is evident in his music. His most influential artists are listed as quartet R&B group Boyz II Men, rapper Nasir Jones, and reggae icon Bob Marley, with his favorite genres listed as reggae and jazz. Prior to learning the guitar, D.L. recorded a hip hop/neo soul mixtape where he took industry tracks and blended melodies over poetic 16's with harmonic filled hooks. The highlight of D.L.'s hip hop phase was working and recording with Grammy award winning record producer Lex Lucazi on several tracks. Although, his mixtape received good reviews, the acoustic sound is a more authentic representation of D.L. as an artist and his originality as a musician. D.L. is putting the final touches on an acoustic recording project. This project is not the usual acoustic song compilation. D.L.’s acoustic project is a conversion of hip hop to acoustic soul. D.L. released a free PROMO of the project on his birthday, November 23 2013, and plans to release the project in its entirety on April 1, 2014. D.L’s first single, “Mr. Soul” from his upcoming EP, is a steady tempo mellow ballad about the importance of finding one’s purpose in life. He admits it was a battle for him, and he believes that people need help in finding what their true purpose is. “Everyone comes to a point in their life where they wonder and search for their divine purpose” he says. “It’s a constant battle that is filled with distractions and uncertainty.” D.L. is successful in creatively portraying this battle with vivid lyrics and a tasteful blend of his musical influences. He is currently performing the acoustic versions of his mixtape and his single “Mr. Soul”. “Mr. Soul” was released January 1, 2014 on CD Baby. Go get it today!
