A quiet day in a Crescent City April is a rare bird. It was on one such a day we sat down, a quartet and played these seven songs. Nasimiyu Murumba sat closest to the window, cloud-diffused light backlighting her as she sang. Peter Orr sat closest to the door. His instruments were spread out behind him with care. Before each new song he would turn in his seat and reach back to choose a new sound while putting to rest the last. Kelly Carlyle Smith was positioned near the door to the gear room. His bass amplifier was actually in the gear room, its output going directly somewhere. We felt the bass more than heard it. B. Singer sat with his back to the wall, sitting forward in his chair, singing and playing the guitar.

The session was was collected, calm, the players relaxed. Small nods and eye contact composed most of the communications. Bits of smoke and steam drifted up from the cup of tea on the window sill behind Nasimiyu. We pressed record and when the tea was gone, the session was over. Light kudos and quiet laughter filled the stairwell. The players, like music set free to a New Orleans afternoon, went the way they will.
