Mozart wrote for singers he knew. They were not all alike, and the music he wrote for them shows the wide range of abilities they offered to his creative genius. I loved doing this album and in no small measure because Mozart never failed to write beautiful melodies even when designing arias for singers who insisted on showing off the surprising vocal prowess that made them famous in their day. The rarely performed music I included herein would be standard repertoire if singers and teachers would just take the time to develop the vocal gifts distributed throughout the World’s population. The title of this album is no doubt a stretch. It might be better titled: “One Tenor in Mozart”, but since I sing arias written for several tenors, I feel comfortable asserting this album as my definition of how a tenor should sing Mozart’s music. Nicholas McGegan is a perfect collaborator for this album. He brought wonderful musical assets and suggestions to the project and I was so happy he accepted to conduct The London Symphony Orchestra and me. That orchestra is a dream to hear and work with.
