Freak Tab is the first studio CD of the Dayton, OH, band Magic Jackson, a group of experienced and polished musicians who somehow blur the line between the genres of rock and funk to produce music that, one moment, will conjure romantic images caressed in soul and blues, while the next will have you on your feet bouncing to the grooving, throbbing beat of the best down-home dance music you have heard in some time. Dayton-area Music Critic Don Thrasher describes Magic Jackson's music as "lascivious white-boy funk" and Freak Tab is a true reflection of that vision. Nathan Lewis (guitar/vocals), Jeff May (lead guitar), Mike McKewen (bass guitar), and Justin Moore( drums) make up Magic Jackson. The opening strains of "Meatfinger" hearken back to the tradition of decades-old funk masters and you can feel the sexual tension as the lyrics eventually proclaim to a lover, "Your body was made for my body." The song title, "Daddy's Funk" speaks for itself and features a bass-line and organ solo that brings the cut to a frantic conclusion. "World", a proclamation that the world can be changed... just "pick up the beat and get on down", features intricate instrumention including a didgeridoo, triangle, saxophone, and keyboards. It is an orchestra of sound but the wrenching guitar of May and the remarkable bass beat of Mike "McNasty" McKewen carry the day. "Buried Alive", "Messin' Round", and "Look Around" are submerged in blues and funk lines while the lyrics explore the complications of relationships gone awry. Thrasher concludes his review of Freak Tab by saying, "The songs all benefit from restrained use of overdubs and the clear separation of each instrument, which assures Lewis’ vocals always shine while also showcasing the ultra-tight rhythm section and the guitar interplay between Lewis and May."
