简介

Recorded in Crown Heights, Brooklyn between January and May of 2013, Skipping Away from Dissonance's eleven songs were written over the past five years, with subject matter ranging from the personal (“Neon Billboards in the Sky,” “Gathering Tide”) to the larger world (“Uncle Sam's Grave,” “I.love.you”). Though personal experience influences many of the tracks on the record, Fuller expanded and colored each of them until the songs were stand-alone short stories. “I cut my teeth on the confessional singer-songwriter records of the '90s,” Jon explains of his lyrical inspiration, “but these days, I've been drawn more to tall tales." Sonically, Jon likes to refer to Skipping Away from Dissonance as his “kitchen sink” album. He elaborates: “With Chris, I found myself in an optimal situation for two reasons: first, because he comes from a rather different background from me – he has much more experience with electronic and R&B elements than I do – so the songs were taken to places that I couldn't even begin to envision, and second, because he would never say 'no' to ideas I had, no matter how outlandish. If they didn't work, of course, we would scrap them, but he always was game to give things a try.” The eclectic instrumentation of Skipping Away from Dissonance showcases this collaboration; “Ghost in the Mirror” features a rhythm track inspired by marching band drum lines, the harpsichord is used to emulate the guitar sounds heard on “Time Machine,” and “More Joy,” the album's closer (which gives a wink to Fuller's classical background with a quotation from a Bizet opera), features an ensemble consisting of violinist Ally Jenkins, violist Emily Bookwalter, cellist David Wojciechowski, and oboist Rachel Seiden.
