简介
Southern Lights is a collection of instrumental duets by tenor saxophonist Doug Mosher and bassist Jon Estes. The record is the culmination of a year and half’s worth of improvised recording sessions by the two young Nashville jazz musicians. A number of the tracks are first take improvisations, while others were composed based on initial improvisations. Although the music was created in a free environment, it hardly sounds that way. Each song is a short, structured composition that showcases both artists’ restraint. The minimalist beauty of the record is a reflection of both musicians’ love of melody and lyricism found not only in jazz, but in folk and Americana music as well. Southern Lights is the newest release on Ear Up Records, the brainchild of 3x grammy award winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band, Flecktones, Mu'tet). Southern Lights embodies the ethos of the label: original and creative music from the newest generation of musicians in Nashville and abroad. “The music is stunning. What a beautiful honest vibe it has. Very, very visual. Really lovely. [Doug’s] sound is so organic…you got to the humanvoice, brother. BRAVO.” – Alan Pasqua (Bob Dylan, Santana, Tony Williams, Alan Holdsworth) “The recording sounds really great! I love the textures, and Doug’s sound in particular. Such a refreeshing departure from all the hard blowing saxophone playing we hear today. You guys create some wild and interesting moods in this duo setting. I like the compositions and interplay between the two of you very much. A real breath of fresh air! Bravo!!” – Bob Mintzer (Yellowjackets, Buddy Rich) “Doug Mosher and Jon Estes have a very unique musical relationship and the music they have produced on ‘Southern Lights’ is hauntingly beautiful. There is no showboating or the usual ‘chops fest’ going on here. This is straight from both the heart and soul of these two brilliant artists and I think you should listen to it carefully.” – Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Mu’tet)
