简介

In the early 1950s Tommy Hancock formed the popular swing band, The Roadside Playboys, in the Lubbock, Texas area. His bands served as house band at the famous Cotton Club backing touring artists ranging from Lefty Frizzell to Little Jimmy Dickens and Tommy Duncan. Charlene Condray Hancock joined the band in 1956 after much success in her own right in radio and TV. She was a contemporary of Buddy Holly and the Crickets who would frequent Tommy's dances. Sonny Curtis, guitarist in the Crickets, also played for awhile in the Roadside Playboys. Tommy later owned the Cotton Club with his parents regularly featuring Bob Wills, Ray Price, Johnny Bush and the Maines Brothers. Over time everyone from Hank Williams to Willie Nelson, Little Richard, Muddy Waters to Stevie Ray Vaughan played the popular club. Known for being supportive of younger musicians, Tommy played fiddle on the original Flatlanders recording and has enjoyed witnessing their continued success. Tommy and Charlene created a musical family and toured as the Supernatural Family Band from 1971 until 1988. Their offspring brought a variety of music into the musical mix and played for a wide assortment of audiences, mostly dances. In 1989 Tommy moved Mexico way and began work on the book, 'Zen and the Art of The Texas Two-Step'. Charlene and daughters, Traci and Conni, formed the 'Texana Dames', recorded and toured extensively. In March of 2000 Tommy and Charlene were inducted into the Austin Music Awards Hall of Fame. Tommy, Charlene, the 'Supernatural Family Band' and the 'Texana Dames' were featured in a documentary titled 'Lubbock Lights' in 2005. Tommy supports live music in Austin, Texas mostly by dancing. He rarely performs. However, he continues to write and record. Charlene continues to play occasionally and advocates preventative healthcare for musicians.
