This recording began as an experiment when I wanted to gain some experience hiring and working with a professional band in what I thought might result in a Motown influenced 4-track EP. Having recently relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana I called up home-town-friend, Scott Feichter (featured guitar soloist in “Just Sing” of Freudian Slip, Track 1) who was familiar with the local jazz scene. He immediately recommended drummer Todd Harrold (www.toddharrold.com). Doing some research I found his local producer, Jon Gillespie, whom, after one phone call returned to me with some of Fort Wayne’s best session players and their available dates. On October 31, 2009, my favorite holiday, I met drummer Todd Harrold; keyboardist, Eric Clancy (www.ericclancy.com); Bassist Tim Beeler of Flynnville Train (www.flynnvilletrain.com) and guitarist, Scott Feichter; in a living room studio all together for the first time. Three hours later these pro’s nearly flawlessly recorded all seven tracks I had charted out for the session. After the session Tim Beeler said, “You knock out three acoustic tracks on your own and you’ve got a full album!” Taking his advice I ended up recording five more tracks in “The Cloister” with Jon Gillespie in the coming sessions that ensued. The later sessions were great experiences working with Jon. As a team we edited, produced, overdubbed vocals and harmonies and arranged the music according to taste. Having the experience of the first two albums I was really able to utilize Jon’s experience as a producer. Having to leave to perform on a cruise ship for three months beginning in January, the project seemed in danger of in-completion, but Jon pulled some extra nights and I think by the end of it we both felt challenged and fulfilled from this project. It was a great learning experience in what culminates to an album that has the influences ranging from Motown, Folk, R’n’B, Blues, and even Jazz. With regards to the artwork, I met the artist on my first temporary labor job in Fort Wayne. My job was to clear out a warehouse of goods for a rubber belt company and I found out my boss was not only a nice guy, but an artist and a long time friend of Scott Feichter’s. Looking up his art on Facebook I thought it would be perfect for the album and asked if he would be interested in using some as album art. He one-upped me with an offer to create a piece specifically for the album. He created a 30” by 30” oil on canvas just for the album! While I was performing the cruise ship my sister helped me out getting the artwork from the graphic designer to the manufacturers, etc. We decided to go with the cardboard wallets, which though are more expensive than jewel cases, are easier to travel with and hopefully have less of an impact on the environment.
