ALSO included in the album is a SECOND data-only CD that contains .pdf format files of the "liner notes" as well as the sheet music for the vocal tracks (the first 9 selections). This is NOT just a sheet of lyrics. The .pdf files include music, chords, AND lyrics. This "virtual songbook" can be viewed on your computer with the appropriate free software of your choice (not supplied), or printed out for reference or performance. BOTH these CDs (audio CD and data CD) are included with the purchase of the CD from CD Baby. The data CD files are NOT available for individual download. Who is Joe Ellis? Joe is a former music teacher and professional musician, (and no known relation to the (in)famous professor of history) who has been writing and performing for over 30 years. He is well known in the field of Filk Music (songs and music referencing science, science fiction and fantasy... mostly) as "The Synthetic Filker", one of the first filkers to take advantage of the possibilities of electronic instruments to expand filk beyond the traditional folk music stylings. Where most filkers come from the folk music tradition, Joe's background is in instrumental music - concert and symphonic bands, and jazz bands and combos. As a result, his approach is more oriented to fuller sounds and orchestrations than the usual for the field, and the use of MIDI and a professional quality synthesizer, along with an understanding of the nuances of phrasing of a variety of instruments, brings a more lifelike sound to his "virtual orchestra". He is also fond of blurring the lines in what has been traditionally considered Filk Music, creating full orchestrations and choral arrangements of well-known songs, as well as introducing appropriately themed classical music (such as "The Erlking") to filk audiences. Joe has been a guest performer at several science fiction conventions, including the Ohio Valley Filk Fest, ConChord, TropicCon, ConFluence, and ConText.
