Despite being heavily entrenched in the local scene for years, Melbourne-based musician Cristian Barbieri has yet to make his mark as a solo artist, until now. The guitarist has been working on his debut release as The CB3 for some time and today shares the first taste of what's to come with the single 'This is Just a Trill'. The track's expertly presented guitar work showcases what to expect on Barbieri's upcoming EP (Exposed) and speaks of the wide range of influences that have been brought together to make the release such an intriguing one. Born into a family of musicians (his dad played alongside John Farnham), he has been actively involved in the live scene since he was 17 when he and his friends began playing underage around Melbourne, often heading into school worse for wear the following morning. Currently operating as lead guitarist for Melbourne act Billy Davis & The Good Lords, Barbieri's band, The CB3, is part of the new Bad Opera movement, which will see collaboration and support between a number of local acts (including Billy Davis). On the single, Barbieri says: “If I wasn't a muso, I'd probably be a thief. I came up with 'This Is Just A Trill' when trying to play 'Arabesque No 2' by Claude Debussy. What I came out with was a bastardised version of an excerpt, which I turned into a whole song. There are probably 40 songs in that one piece alone! He has so many great ideas. his work is incredible and still so relevant. It's the first tune I wrote when writing for this EP and I love playing it. I like that it explores a bunch of melodic ideas and sections over one groove, which is something I learned from playing funk and R&B tunes.”
