简介
Thanks to the union of two powerful languages, music and poetry, the Catalan art song is a mirror in which society is reflected throughout different points in history. In addition to its poetic beauty, art song is a genre that has played an important role in the processes of constructing a national identity, evident in the use of text, theme, language, as well as musical style. The turning point in the development of the art song genre is the advent of the Spanish Civil War, an event that delineates a clear “before and after” in the processes of creation and dissemination. The CD De Catalunya vinc... is important to Catalan culture and heritage since it enlivens works by particular composers who succeeded in translating into music the essence of the Catalan soul at different periods, both before and after the war. In order to illustrate the diverse styles and sonorities and to allow the listener to connect the different moments through music, this CD includes music by two composers whose works were written during the transition between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: Enric Morera (1865-1942) and Jaume Pahissa (1880-1969). It continues with a selection of bright Mediterranean songs by Eduard Toldrà (1895-1962), which are typical of the noucentista aesthetic dated prior to the Spanish Civil War. The musical journey continues with works written in 1936, the year in which the war erupted. Representative of this time is the precious song cycle La rosa als llavis, written by Toldrà in 1936 with texts by Salvat-Papasseit and dedicated to the singer Conxita Badia (1897-1975). The cycle could not be premiered until 1947 upon Badia’s return from exile in Argentina. Another song dedicated to Badia is entitled Neu. Composed in Paris by Frederic Mompou (1893-1987), it is a sad farewell to his friend as she is about to leave Europe and face exile in Argentina. The CD continues with Combat del somni, a song cycle by Mompou, written in Paris with texts by Josep Janés. These introspective songs are strongly influenced by Debussy, expressing grief and hope with a sound that depicts an encounter with freedom, which at that time could only be found in exile. As a symbolic thread connecting the post-war period of Mompou with the postmodern Catalonia of the twenty-first century, we also include the song cycle Combat del somni, written by Carlota Garriga (1937). Setting different poems and offering a woman’s perspective, this cycle could be considered to be a continuation of Mompou’s work. The poetic texts of the songs are written by some of the most important Catalan poets, including such outstanding writers as Joan Llogueras (1880-1953), Josep Janés (1914-1959), Joan Maragall (1860-1911), Tomàs Garcés (1901-1903), Josep Carner (1884-1970), Trinidad Catasús (1887-1940), Josep M. de Sagarra (1894-1961), Joan Salvat-Papasseit (1894-1924) and Pere Ribot (1908-1997). De Catalunya vinc... offers an essential journey into understanding Catalan culture, history, and sensibility in which the art song serves as a mirror in which society and its values are reflected at different points in history.
