For Sumeau's Christopher Sousa and Kat Primeau, it was quickly apparent the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. Their first recordings were hallucinatory compositions, improvised on a rare rainy Sunday in LA. The artist's mutual place of employment, EastWest Studios, and a bedroom studio they soon shared, fostered an 'outside the dohyō' exploration of sounds, images, stimulus and response. Their late night sessions saw Kat penning lyrics atop rollerblades as Chris laid the foundations of a sound that is familiar yet foreign, bathed in nostalgia and gauzy with wonder. A debut single and video followed for 2013's Next Day, described as a "lo-fi score for a happy napdream" and filmed amidst 1300 blue balloons. Their debut self-titled album is a mixed tape of sorts, flush with imagination and melancholy, charm and optimism, a resonance of the artists and the art they surround themselves with.
