The number they assigned him was 18.231.1086, but everyone just called him Digger. He wasn't very pleased with his job, he didn’t even know what an archaeologist was, and in this society it seemed to serve little function. For Digger and his people, there was no past.

While the history of the first 138 years inside their domes had been recorded, no one knew exactly how the domes had come to be, who had built them, or if there had ever been life outside of them.
