David Kurkowski wrote the songs performed here over a 14-year period stretching from 1999-2012. The songs were composed in response to life events: an anniversary, a wedding, a retirement, a personal crisis, a holiday. The title song, It's Midnight, was composed for a movie that was never produced. All of these songs sat on the shelf; that is they were sung once or twice, but never recorded.

Over the last couple years, David studied jazz piano with George Mesterhazy. George always brought out the best in every musician he ever worked with. When George discovered that David had written a collection of songs, he smiled in glee. Referring to himself as "the finisher," George created the arrangements, added the color chords, and brought the songs to life.

George invited "chanteuse" Paula Johns to sing and Bob Fowler to be the engineer. The songs were recorded in three sessions (January-March 2012) after hours at the Merion Inn in Cape May, NJ, where George played nightly in the piano bar. Most of the recordings were made with just two or three live takes. Over the following few weeks, George, Bob and David worked together in the studio on orchestrations; their last session together was on April 2, 2012. Sadly, George died in his sleep on April 12, 2012. These may be his last recordings.

One song remained unrecorded--On the Road of Life. George's longtime friend Barry Miles stepped in to accompany Paula and to orchestrate the album's final song. The closing line is our tribute to George: "We're better far for having heard his song."
