Charles de Lint is the author of more than 70 novels and short story collections. The Little Country was one of his first novels to become widely popular in 1991, and was nominated for the World Fantasy Award, one of the highest distinctions in speculative fiction. The novel, which takes place in Cornwall, England, evokes a singular mysticism for old lands and tales that still live in the root of our souls, waiting to be woken once again. In the appendices to the novel, de Lint includes transcriptions of his own original Celtic melodies, many of which evoke the characters and settings of the story. This project has been an effort to awaken these tunes, as well as an experiment in fusing musical styles. In bringing these tunes into a chamber music setting with new arrangements, we hope to have created a new way to relate the mystical story of The Little Country.
