The richness and purity of Valencia’s vocals are evident after she sings just one note. Her voice has a way of warming the very souls of her listeners. Combining a soulful spirit with poignant lyrics, Valencia Robinson disarms her audience and opens their minds to the possibilities of love and life by sharing her experiences in a music entrée that is described by many as “Raw Soul.” With Valencia, there’s no need for the monotonous additives, props or smoke and mirrors to aid her talent. It should come as no surprise that Valencia Robinson has soul music running through her veins. When you’re born in the soul city of Memphis, Tennessee, the home of Stax Records, you can’t help but take to the music in much the way a young eagle takes to flight. Growing up, Valencia first began honing her onsiderable skills in the church, listening to such influences as Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland. Valencia’s talents have allowed her to work with such noted artists as Cleveland, Carla Thomas, and Edwin Hawkins to name just a few. However, an open mind to all forms of music enabled the Brooklyn, NY based songbird to mature in her craft. Not one to be boxed in with any one style of music, Valencia began experimenting with every music style from jazz to opera to blues to soul. After high school, Valencia sang in various spots around Memphis before deciding to test her skills. Saving up enough money for a ticket to Europe, Valencia traveled to France, where she spent the next six months performing in various clubs and theaters as a blues singer. Valencia says. The experience was enriching and gave Valencia all the confidence she needed to record her debut CD, a five-song masterpiece that’s considered a classic by various publications and many people in the music industry. Valencia, who cites soul legends such as Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and Marvin Gaye as her influences, recorded the CD with help of a guitar player. Valencia says. “I couldn’t speak the language, and they didn’t see me as real blues singer at first because of my petite size. They saw blues singers as big women,” “But I became a favorite of the crowds and I worked until I came back to Memphis.” Soul Searchin’ “Listening to artists like Stevie, Aretha and Marvin gave me the inspiration to do music,” “I look to the greats for encouragement.” Known for her amazing live performances, Valencia is also an incredible poet on the creative edge.
