The character in this song is based upon two sources. I bumped into a boyhood friend in the recent past and with no prompting, he proceeded to tell me his viewpoint on politics, society, and life in general. I had also been collecting quotes from comedian/conservative commentator Dennis Miller with thought of using this for a song. I ended up combining the two to build a character that was based on reality but also made up. My intent (and challenge) was to tell a convincing story from a point of view not my own. I’m not passing judgment but only stating the facts according to the character. Story telling is a huge tradition on my mother's side of the family, going back to our Nova Scotian roots and probably before. Thinking back, I wish I had written down all the stories her Uncle Charlie had told us when visiting the Glace Bay area, it would have made a book. I had spent some time working out the lead guitar melody and sound. Once I decided I wanted an agitated tone, things quickly fell in place. I’m happy with the results. Though I would never compare myself with Mark Knopfler, this song drew much inspiration from his work. One reason why I'm so drawn to Mr. Knopfler’s songs, such as "Boom, Like That" (about Ray Kroc) , "Heart Full of Holes" and "The Scaffolder's Wife" is that he makes these people seem so real, with their thoughts and desires. His songs are condensed books with stories and plots, which just amazes me.
