简介

Trio Wanderer celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and this survey of all the Beethoven piano trios testifies to the ensemble’s communicative panache and to its confident handling of the different demands of a considerable span of music. The joy of playing such a virile piece as the early E flat Trio Op?1 No?1 comes across with dynamism and freshness, just as the Archduke Trio at the opposite end of the time spectrum is interpreted with a radiant glow, a rapt serenity in the slow movement and sense of fun in the finale. This fourth disc in the set also contains the Kakadu Variations Op?121a, where Beethoven’s sense of humour manifests itself once more when the perky theme eventually emerges only after a long, labyrinthine and portentous introduction (Dohnányi was later to do much the same in his Variations on a Nursery Tune). The trios are arranged chronologically across the four CDs, the three of Op?1 followed by the B flat major Op?11 No?1, the one originally scored for clarinet but often, as here, using a violin. The two trios Op?70, including the Ghost in D major, precede the Archduke Op?97. But the set also accommodates the Variations on Ja, ich muss mich von ihr scheiden Op?44 and concludes with two other trios separated by 20 years. One in E flat WoO38 comes from the early 1790s, the other in B flat WoO39 is the last trio Beethoven wrote, in 1812, an innocent, charming invention for the young daughter of one of his intimate friends. The Wanderer brings terrific character and understanding to all this music, constantly alerting the ear to Beethoven’s fertile creative imagination.
