While there's no doubting the sincerity of the tribute, its bucolic imagery is somewhat misleading. McDonough's second album is actually harder-edged and considerably more urbane than her first. "Second Avenues," "Dark Cafes" and "Let Me Sing The Blues" create a world-weary, coming of age triptych. "Cafes" is most impressive, with its accurate summation of how the failure of a relationship can kill a person's social life: "I sit over coffee alone these days/and I never catch the latest art displays". The song also boasts a beautiful, unexpected jazzy interlude. Given that McDonough is clearly good at darkly poetic social reportage, it's a shame there isn't more of it on the album. More space is given over to standard folk material like "Lady In Love" and "Dirty Dishes" - nearly all of it good, but without the touches of genius that can be glimpsed in the duskier, more atmospheric material.
