[redrawblak] is New Orleans saxophonist Brad Walker's project dedicated exclusively to the discipline of true free improvisation. Over the years this project has featured some of the most compelling minds of the New Orleans creative music scene, including Simon Lott, Helen Gillet, James Singleton, Jeff Albert, and many others. The project is dedicated to the idea that truly free, unstructured, unplanned improvisation leads to compelling music that could not have been created any other way. This month we're celebrating the release of a new CD+LP, recorded in June with New Orleans luminaries Aurora Nealand and Paul Thibodeaux, and to be pressed on vinyl and CD by Chicago's Two Cities Records. As a trio, Brad and Aurora and Paul have been working together for over two years, but this is their first chance to document their music. Paul is known as one of the most sensitive and dynamic drummers in a city known for its rhythm, and Aurora (featured on saxophone, accordion, percussion, piano, vocals, and spoken word) is without a doubt one of the Crescent City's major artistic forces of this generation. The music they make as a trio has been compared to film soundtracks, meditative exercises, seances, and even (in rare cases) out-of-body experiences. 2012 also saw the release of two shorter statements from [redrawblak]: a Solo EP, consisting of four lengthy and potent explorations of solo saxophone+electronics soundscapes, and a Duo EP featuring New Orleans drum virtuoso Simon Lott in a series of compelling improvisations arranged in two suites: Light and Dark.
