Founded by Christopher Beairsto, drummer, and Ryan Dempsey, singer, in the summer of 2013 after leaving their first project, Koolsneak. Dempsey and Beairsto wanted to go in a different direction than the rest of the band. After several attempts on creating a band name, the duo could not think of a name for their new project. They decided to name the group “For Lack of A Term,” which would be shortened down to FLoAT. After awhile of jamming together, they decided to look for a bass player that met their musical standards. Gregory Jean joined the band because of a mutual friend. Dempsey, Beairsto and Jean became the original FLoAT line up. The 3-piece made their debut at the Ultimate Music Fest in February of 2014. The Ultimate Music Fest was a local talent showcase held at Webster Hall. After recording a few demos, the band considered bringing in a second guitar player to lesson Dempsey’s workload during live performances. In September of 2014, Dempsey saw a flyer at Astoria Soundworks advertising a guitarist looking for a band to play with. Phill Ortiz became an official member of FLoAT after a jam session. The new 4-piece made their live debut for Taking Back Queens, a DIY booking company, in November of 2014. At the start of 2015, FLoAT teamed up with Kenneth Bryan Candelas to produce their first EP. All their recording sessions have taken place in The City College of New York. Although they have been hard at work with their EP, they still manage the time to play shows. They have played at O’Brian’s Pub, Coco 66, Taking Back Queens, Santo’s Party House and Bushwick Public House. After several long months, their EP is ready to be released. FLoAT. The lead single, “Sugar Mama”, has received a lot of positive feedback from both fans and fellow bands in the New York music scene. Fans have likened their sound to bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cage the Elephant, The Foo Fighters, and many more. They are excited to reveal the fruits of their labors.
