简介

The SWARMIUS Ensemble exists in various permutations — this release features the debut of Sahara (Sarah Davis Draper) on harp, Schrodinger's Sax (Michael Couper) on Soprano sax, and Justinius LionHeart (Justin DeHart) on vibraphone. They join SAXIMUS (Todd Rewoldt) on Alto Sax and Jozefius Rattus (Joseph Martin Waters), composer & electronics. Whereas SWARMIUS is known for virtuosic instrumental pyrotechnics and eclectic, pulsing electronics, this trio of miniatures is about quiet, gesture, poise and space. The electronics are gone and the tempos of "Icicles in Starlight" & "Snowflakes in Starlight" are like a quiet conversation between lovers. The suite ends with "Aurora in Starlight", an evocation of the northern lights in the form of a quick virtuosic dance — here and gone in a blink. These 3 miniatures were premiered at the 36th Annual Festival of New American Music on Nov. 3, 2013. They resulted from a request to Jozefius from SAXIMUS for gentle flowing music that focuses on gesture and melody, and are the first of an ongoing series of super hi-fidelity acoustic tracks (these were recorded at a stratospheric 192,000 samples/sec. and with a bit depth of 32 bits.) The resulting sound has a shimmering, weightless quality. "Snowflakes in Starlight" is soft, early winter snow – European folk, like McCartney's "Blackbird". "Icicles in Starlight" is Buddhist Impressionism – a dark shimmering landscape. "Aurora in Starlight" is a virtuosic duet featuring Michael Couper on soprano sax & Justin DeHart on vibraphone. It is a dance of rapidly cascading harmonies like the Aurora on a starry night on the arctic circle (inspired by Swarmius' journey to Alaska for a performance in Fairbanks).
