Established in 1856, Whelans of Shanaglish is a quiet, rural pub situated in Ireland - north south between Galway and Ennis, and east west betwen The Burren and Lough Cutra. It is a rare and unique area, and the pub has been home to many sessions of song, music, story and dance over the years. Nights In Shanaglish was directed by Vince Keehan (who grew up closeby but now lives in San Francisco) and Paddy Egan (from Wicklow but now in London). The album celebrates the gathering of emigrant musicians who are back on home territory, performing with local people in this region of south Galway. The aim when recording the 16 sound files "live" in Whelans Bar, was to have the smallest amount of sound equipment present, contributing to a natural, "session" like atmosphere, where people could feel at ease. Vincey and Paddy wanted to capture the essence of what went on in Whelan's over many years of nights experiencing great community spirit, with a variety of different types of performances. Locals who had just visited the pub during these recording sessions were asked to perform just as they would on a usual night in Whelans. The result of this endeavour has been the capturing of rare locally composed songs, unique yarn stories (short verbal art performance), sean nós (old style) dancing, lilting, and music from various genres.
