简介

Crooked Weather are an acoustic three piece band based in Hull. Their sound is distinct, earthy and just a little bit unruly. Will sings and plays guitar, Danny throws down on the bass and Martyn beefs it out, reigning over the cajon and bells. Will hails from Cottingham, East Yorkshire, and Dan is a (crisp-munching) Mackem. They met at Hull University where they were both studying an undergraduate Masters degree in physical geography. By the end of 2008, they were well on their way to a crooked stride, crafting out their own songs and style and cutting their teeth at the King Billy’s legendary Acoustic Underground. In time aside from studies, both travelled extensively. In 2010 they negotiated Europe with a £500 Saxo, their instruments and a 1980 road map. Their first EP, GIN, was forged and proofed during this time and recorded on their return. It’s characterized by restlessness, it’s littered with inspirational meetings, it’s redolent of Yorkshire from within and it’s calling for Yorkshire from without; these concerns, then established, remain at the heart of the Crooked Weather musical flavour. In the last eighteen months, there have been some very interesting developments– The first development is an album: Will spent most of 2012 in Australia; Danny spent most of his year with maps, cigarettes and delicacies from Greggs. These experiences inform the first Crooked Weather album, ‘Quantum Mango’, written in the latter part of the year. They convened in Hull in early 2013 to record it with the prolific Stewart Baxter (of the Warren Project) and with the veteran recordist John Cox in his hallowed Cupboard studio. The result is consummate Crooked Weather, equal parts chops, unruliness and earthy rhythm. Above all, it finds these men poised intriguingly between youth and experience; on the cusp of something. The second development is a man: the duo met him very recently at a music night in Hull’s Bay Horse. His name is Martyn and his percussion has been a quick, natural fit in the band’s sound. The band, now a trio, are already writing and recording a follow-up to ‘Quantum Mango’ as they go about a busier and busier gigging schedule.
