简介

Our relationships are often indicative of where and who we are in a certain chapter of our lives. They remind us why we crave some things and draw pain from others. Most of all, they challenge us to ask where we stand in the thick of vulnerability. In her debut album, AudioBook, San Diego-bred, Brooklyn-based artist Geminelle finds herself in the complication and clarity that springs from love. At its core, AudioBook is a journey of self and spirituality. On “Run,” the album’s most energetic track, Geminelle sends a message to her subconscious: “You can run, you can hide, but I will find you.” There is no love without truth, she suggests, and no truth without first facing yourself. In its twelve-track span, AudioBook is equal parts self-liberating and love-defining. But, as Geminelle insists, love doesn’t come easy. Instead, it tends to bring expectations like those expressed on the album’s first track, “Human Condition.” Reciting a spoken word poem about “proof that [she’s] been processed,” Geminelle laughs at the image of who she’s supposed to be — an image that strays far from who she is but still informs how she’s come to know herself. Over the course of the album, this image becomes clearer. In songs like “Flawed,” she embraces her own humanity. In others like “True,” she finds a special place to share it. The most striking element of AudioBook, though, is Geminelle’s voice. Accompanied by a ukulele, understated basslines, and electric guitar melodies, her rich vocals stand out in a spacious sonic atmosphere produced by PRVDNT and Soulection's AbJo. A neo-soul/trap hybrid, the project lends an edge to its otherwise laid-back, groove-ridden mood. On AudioBook, Geminelle learns to let go, to love, to be herself. On the album’s last track, “Kiss and Tell,” she draws a simple conclusion as she steps into her next chapter: “I’m going to let it go, let the universe flow, flow, flow.”
